The Boyer Auto Group Pickering Panthers secured their first victory of the season with a commanding 6-1 win over the Aurora Tigers at the Chestnut Hill Developments Recreation Complex on Sunday night.
The Panthers took control early, scoring five goals in the first period. Joey Zhang opened the scoring, followed by goals from Owen Dunning, Blake Wright, Zennon Edwards, and Kailin Chen, who also tallied a power-play goal to cap off the dominant first period.
Aurora’s Matthew Johnson scored in the second period, but Quinn Binnie quickly answered to extend Pickering’s lead. Goaltender Gavin Betts secured his first win as a Panther, stopping 31 of 32 shots.
Pickering outshot Aurora 33-32 and successfully converted one of their seven power-play opportunities, while the Tigers went 0 for 6 on theirs.
The Panthers’ strong offensive start and solid defensive effort gave them a decisive win in front of their home fans.
Their next game is on the road Friday in Markham against the Royals at 7:30 PM.
